Enhance Your Academic English and Teaching Skills at Maynooth University

Two Micro-Credential Opportunities, One Goal!

Maynooth University is offering two intensive 2-week micro-credential programmes designed for academic staff working in Higher Education who teach through English. Both courses are aligned with NFQ Level 9 and carry 5 ECTS credits upon successful completion. Whether your focus is on academic writing or teaching practice, there’s a course to suit your goals.

1. Academic English in Practice: EMI and Pedagogical Competence

CAO/MU Apply Code: MMC41; MMC43
CEFR Level: C1.1
Fee: €995
Closing Date: 6 July 2025

This course goes beyond language development, combining Academic English usage with critical pedagogical reflection. Participants will explore the theory and practice of teaching through English, including topics like EMI philosophy, sociolinguistic challenges, CLIL, and teaching philosophy statements. The module uses immersive methods to help participants adapt their own teaching approaches and reflect on their practice in a multilingual academic environment.

This is the right choice for those seeking to deepen their pedagogical awareness and teaching effectiveness in English-medium settings.

2. English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP2)

CAO/MU Apply Code: MMC46; MMC47
CEFR Level: B2.2
Fee: €995
Closing Date: 6 July 2025

This course supports academic staff in refining their academic English language skills, especially in written communication. Participants will explore the use of English in academic contexts including feedback, assessment design, academic writing, and presentation delivery. The emphasis is on practical application, with daily writing tasks, peer discussion, and feedback.

Ideal for those aiming to improve their clarity, accuracy, and style in academic English, this module focuses on real-life communication in the EMI/EME context.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants for both programmes should hold at least a Level 8 Honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent. Those with significant professional experience may apply through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) route. All participants must demonstrate English proficiency:

  • ESAP2: CEFR B2.2 or higher

  • EMI & Pedagogical Competence: CEFR C1.1 or higher

These micro-credentials offer a unique chance to enhance your academic English and teaching practice in a supportive, expert-led environment.
