Section 14 of the UG stipulates that universities must establish their own quality management system to ensure quality and performance, which covers the university's tasks and its entire range of services. This also includes quality assurance and quality development in teaching. Regular evaluation processes (e.g. course evaluations) by students are an important feedback and management tool and provide a basis for quality assurance and development measures.

Which courses are evaluated?

Since the 2022/23 academic year, the alternating mechanism according to faculty affiliation has been applied to courses every two years. All courses in a faculty are subject to mandatory evaluation in the winter and summer semesters of an academic year; in the following year, the courses in this faculty are not evaluated. In the following year, all courses in this faculty are evaluated again in both the winter and summer semesters.

  • Academic year 2024/25: Catholic Theology; Humanities; Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences
  • Academic year 2025/26: Law; Social and Economic Sciences; Natural Sciences; Courses of inter-faculty institutions
  • etc.

Independently of this, any lecturer can voluntarily participate in the course evaluation and activate it themselves in UNIGRAZonline.

This is how the course evaluation is implemented at the University of Graz:

If a course is scheduled for mandatory evaluation, the teacher will receive an e-mail notification at the beginning of the semester.
The course evaluation takes place in UNIGRAZonline.
A standardised questionnaire is used for the evaluation. The language of the evaluation (German or English) is determined by entering the teaching and learning method in UNIGRAZonline. Teachers can also add their own additional questions.
The mandatory evaluation starts automatically on January 15 or June 7, but lecturers can also change the start date themselves in UNIGRAZonline.
Students will receive an e-mail notification and a link as soon as the evaluation is possible.
Teachers are advised to give their students time to complete the questionnaire during the course in order to increase the response rate.
The evaluation result of an individual course can initially only be viewed by the respective teacher in UGo. Via the personal business card, the teacher can decide whether to release or block the result for registered UGo users (i.e. staff and students).

Teachers can find the questionnaire, the employee agreement, detailed information and instructions for implementation in UNIGRAZonline as well as FAQs on the intranet.
