Video conferencing & livestream
Video conferencing
Video conferencing can be used to emulate parts of the synchronous teaching/learning setting of a face-to-face teaching. Video conferences are particularly suitable for interactive scenarios in smaller groups. Good methodological and pedagogical preparation is essential in order to conduct a video conference that is supportive of learning.
The following questions should be clarified in advance: What are the objectives of the video conference? How can students be actively involved? How do students get a chance to speak?
Pedagogical considerations and tips on the use of video conferencing in teaching can be found in the Moodle course Digitale Lehre (in German).
At the University of Graz, there are several options for holding video conferences. Below you will find a list of the available tools.
BigBlueButton / uniMEET
The University of Graz provides the internal open source webinar and video conferencing solution uniMEET/BigBlueButton for virtual meetings, online courses, online exams and online events. You can either add the BigBlueButton activity in a Moodle course or use the standalone application uniMEET via a browser and send the link to participants (staff, students, external participants).
ZOOM
For virtual meetings, online courses, online exams and online events, the University of Graz provides the webinar and video conferencing solution ZOOM. You can either add the Zoom activity in a Moodle course, use the standalone Zoom application in a browser, or use the desktop client (available via the Software Center) and send the link to participants (employees, students, external participants).
Skype4Business
The telephone service system at the University of Graz is Skype for Business. The system offers video conferencing via your PC. However, it is recommended to use uniMEET or Zoom for online teaching.
Webex (discontinued service)
This video conferencing tool is only available at the University of Graz until 30.09.2024!
Livestream and recordings
At the University of Graz, you have the opportunity to livestream and/or record your lessons in lecture halls equipped for this purpose. You can choose whether the livestream or recording should be made available to the public or to a restricted group of users.
Alternatively, you can also use or produce other types of video recordings and upload them via uniTUBE. The University of Graz has two professional recording studios (in the uniIT AV Media Studio & at the Center for Digital Teaching and Learning) as well as various software programs. You can make all of the above-mentioned forms of recordings available to your students via Moodle.
uniTUBE
uniIT operates a video content management system for recording, editing and providing video and audio files. A web portal provides a central entry point for all modules. uniTUBE runs on hardware of the University of Graz and is integrated into Moodle, i.e. links from uniTUBE can be embedded into Moodle.
